- Microscopic, unicellular organisms, some of which are pathogenic and can cause infection and disease in animals and humans. Most often, nonpathogenic bacteria, such as fecal coliform and enterococci, are used to indicate the likely presence of disease-causing, fecal-borne microbial pathogens.
